Resumen

En este artículo quiero presentar las consecuencias que tiene la teoría monista de Johann G. Herder sobre el concepto de cultura, para mostrar que ésta no puede entenderse exclusivamente como los contenidos mentales o simbólicos independientes al cuerpo y la materia. Primero presentaremos las críticas que Herder levanta al dualismo, principalmente de corte racionalista; posteriormente describiremos la teoría monista que elabora el pensador alemán; después daremos las claves generales de la concepción que tiene Herder de la cultura, para finalizar con las consecuencias del monismo sobre la interpretación espiritual de la cultura, centrándonos en el lugar que tiene el cuerpo como producción cultural.

Abstract

In this article I want to present the consequences of Johann G. Herder’s monism theory on the concept of culture, to show that culture cannot be understood exclusively as mental or symbolic contents independent of body and matter. We will first present Herder’s criticism of dualism, mainly of a rationalist nature; subsequently we will describe the monistic theory elaborated by the German thinker; then we will give the general keys to Herder’s conception of culture, to conclude with the consequences of monism on the spiritual interpretation of culture, focusing on the place of the body as a cultural production.
